A software factory for U.S. clients: how we do it
Working from Colombia for clients in the United States: time zone, contracts, invoicing and quality.
Exporting software services from Colombia works better than many expect, and the main reason is not price: it is the time zone.
The advantage that actually matters
Colombia sits in the same time band as the U.S. east coast, one or two hours apart depending on the season. That means morning meetings on both sides, same-day answers and no overnight handoff. Compared with a team ten hours away, the difference in iteration speed is enormous.
How we structure the work
- Scope in stages, fixed price per stage. Nobody signs a blank cheque to a supplier in another country.
- A working demo every two weeks. It is the only real way to build trust at a distance.
- The client’s repository from day one. The code is born in their account, not ours.
- Deployment documentation in English, so any team can pick it up later.
The administrative side, without surprises
We invoice in dollars when the client prefers it and in pesos when that suits better. Exporting services is treated differently from a local sale for tax purposes, so the contract and the invoice have to be set up properly from the start: it is worth reviewing with your accountant before the first invoice, not after.
On intellectual property the rule we use is simple: everything we build for a client belongs to the client, and it says so in writing. We keep no rights over the result.
Where it usually breaks
Not in the code. It breaks in expectations: a requirement understood differently by each side and validated by nobody in time. That is why we ask a lot of questions before starting and show something working early, even if it is ugly. Finding a misunderstanding in week two is far cheaper than in week twelve.
Today we serve clients in Colombia and the United States with the same process. If you are evaluating a supplier in Latin America, write to us and we will tell you how we would approach your case.
Is there a process costing you hours?
Tell us, and after a one-hour call we give you a cost and time range.
